PHOTO THERAPY WORKSHOP

What makes a good photograph “good”? What does a photographer really look at, what does he see, what does he knowingly leave out of the frame? What silent decisions are made in his mind just before pressing the shutter?

Photo Therapy explores these questions over two evenings. It looks not only at the visible surface of the photograph, but also at the gaze, the way of seeing, and the thought process at the moment of decision that make that surface possible.

Third-generation photographer Mehmet Turgut reveals the invisible decisions behind his photographs, starting from his own production process; He shares the perspective he has developed over the years, both theoretically and practically. On Tuesday and Thursday evenings, we escape the pace of the city and delve into the silent layers of photography. Together, we explore the unseen behind the visible, the subtle threshold between light and shadow. The perspective gained here doesn’t stay in the workshop; it changes not only the images you look at, but also how you look at them.

Workshop Dates: September 8-10
Space: date-ist
Locaion: Google Maps Date IST

The workshop will take place at Date-ist’s printing, design, and application office, located a four-minute walk from the Sanayi Mahallesi Metro Station.

Most people interested in photography get stuck at a certain point. The number of photos taken increases, memory cards fill up. But it remains unclear which photo is good and why, and how to recreate the same effect in the next shot.

Often, the missing element isn’t technical knowledge; it’s knowing what you’re looking for.

Photo Therapy focuses precisely on this issue. Your own photographs are placed on the table. Mehmet Turgut clearly explains which shots remain standing and which ones have failed.

In the portrait session, Mehmet Turgut takes a portrait of each participant and explains how a portrait is constructed using the person’s own photograph.

The program also explores the intricacies of generating photographs with artificial intelligence and making appropriate adjustments to the resulting images. It discusses how photographers can adapt to changing production methods and new dynamics.

Phototherapy is not a therapy or clinical practice in the classical sense. The aim here is to create a meaningful space where people can confront their own perspective and move beyond what they see.

WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE PRICE

  • A total of four hours of training spread over two evenings, and the experience of working with Mehmet Turgut in a small group of ten.
  • A digital copy of your portrait, taken by Mehmet Turgut during the portrait training.
  • Refreshments provided during the workshop.
  • An online photo reading meeting to evaluate the assigned work.
  • The right to submit photographs to an exhibition selection that will be created from the photographs of the participants after the workshop.

THE EXHIBITION – PHOTO THERAPY WORKSHOP DOESN’T END THERE.

Assignments are given to participants after the training. Mehmet Turgut reviews all the submitted photographs and selects one piece from each participant that he deems suitable for exhibition.

Once a certain number of workshop groups have been completed, a joint exhibition of selected photographs is organized. The exhibition takes place in one of Istanbul’s renowned art venues. The venue and dates are announced closer to the exhibition period.

Exhibition participation is not included in the workshop fee. Once your photograph is selected, you will be notified separately of the exhibition conditions and participation fee. Participation is entirely optional; there is no obligation to attend the exhibition.

The photographs to be exhibited are printed in a format suitable for exhibition. Once the exhibition ends, the print is sent to the participant, who keeps it. If any sales occur during the exhibition, the proceeds are shared equally between the gallery and the participant.

FOR WHOM?

For anyone interested in photography. No skill level or equipment requirements.

In Photo Therapy, what matters is not the participant’s level, but their interest in photography. If you want to improve yourself as a photographer and gain a new perspective, you’re in the right place.
